The kind where you get to wear jammies and sip coffee and watch ducks search for grubs while you wait for your turns to get some work done.

The World’s Most Perfect Nephew was born 3 years ago today. I was supposed to be there, but the little bugger was late, and I had to get back to grad school. He was only a few months old when I left for med-school on the other side of the world, so I’ve only gotten to know him in hops and jumps and lots of videos and video chat. I wouldn’t think that such a small creature who I still am just getting to know would be able to wield so much power over my heart, but oh goodness he does. Just thinking about him and the little person he is growing to be makes my heart threaten to burst right out of my ribcage. He’s definitely, without a doubt, the sweetest little boy I have ever met. He’s just pure magic. I swear that kid was born smiling and has barely stopped since. Happy birthday bug, your Zia loves you more than your little 3 year old mind is capable of comprehending. <3

sometimes my sister sends me videos of my nephew, wearing purple crocs and a skirt, running down the street to get away from imaginary lions & tigers, but still waiting at the corner to hold his mom’s hand across the street, and, kind of, a little bit, my heart explodes.

in a good way.
