I had to get up at 4:30 this am. I’ve had to everyday this week. It’s 9:30pm and I’m just now leaving the hospital. I have a cold. My throat hurts. I’m breaking out and the skin on my face and lips is raw from changing humidities and cold weather. I’m ravenously hungry. My body is on the verge of falling apart and I don’t think I even understand “tired” anymore, because even though I feel a bit like a zombie, I am actually, in all seriousness, looking forward to spending my one day off studying tomorrow and jumping right back in the fire on Monday. I worked, hard, all week, doing my best to suppress a nearly overwhelming sense of incompetence. This stage of med-school is hard, because we’re expected to act like doctors, but really we’re just like Bambi when he first steps out onto the frozen pond; all legs and no feet to stand on. We’re expected to make assessments and plans that demonstrate a wealth of knowledge and good medical decision making, but we have no foundation of experience to draw from. It’s incredibly awkward, often demoralizing, and yet, somehow, I feel AWESOME. I am so excited to be where I am, learning what I’m learning. I can’t wait to be a doctor. #gpoy #words #medschool

If I could spend every afternoon studying in the sunshine of spring in Jerusalem, birds singing merrily in the background, I would be a happy camper. #Iwouldalsobealottanner #andsmarterforallofthestudying #medschool #Jerusalem (Taken with Instagram at The holy city)

Well I think my talk yesterday went as well as it could have. It was the very last talk at the end if a 4-hour program where everyone went over. One of the keynote speakers gave one of the most offensive talks I’ve ever heard. They tried to cut me off right when I was getting to the meat of my talk so I smiled and said I’m sorry, but I think this is important and I really want to say it so I’m just going to keep talking. The audience chuckled and hung onto every hurried word. At the very end the moderator came and just stood next to me at the podium. I half expected him to pull out an over-sized cane to yank me off the stage. I was shaking as I walked down the steps. Afterwards, at the dinner, everyone came up to me and thanked me for not backing down; that they had appreciated my talk and wanted to hear more. The moderator came up and apologized for rushing me and said I’d done a splendid job. I told him I understood; he’d had a job to do and so had I. #medschool #globalhealth (Taken with Instagram at The desert)

You know those perfectly warm sunny spring afternoons where you wish with nearly all of your being that you could spend the day outside reading in the grass or hiking or tossing a frisbee with friends or just about anything besides sitting inside and studying? Yeah, that. Right now. #medschool #sunshine (Taken with Instagram at The desert)
