This is just about the only story line where I related to Susie more than Calvin. When I was in first grade we had to line up at the door to our classroom before going in from recess. One day this boy Emilio was in line by me and hit me. I don’t think I even hit him back but I did yell and we both got sent to the principal’s office. I was horrified. The principal’s office?! That was for bad kids; I was a good kid. In retrospect this was probably the best part of the principal’s job; two little pipsqueaks in the face of AUTHORITY, it must’ve been hard for him to keep a straight face as we recounted the series of events. Our punishment was that we both had to write “I’m sorry” notes to each other. My best friend found his note to me in my cubby and still, to this day, teases me about my “love letter” from Emilio. At the time I was so humiliated and I hated that boy. In retrospect, being the age we were, he probably had a crush, and, like always, I was completely oblivious; even when he literally hit me with the information. Oops. #feministfromthegetgo
