Glass Beach, Northern California

From 1950 to 1967, residents of Fort Bragg, California chose to dispose of their waste by hurling it off the cliffs above a beach. No object was too toxic or too large such as household appliances, automobiles, and all matter of trash were tossed into the crashing waves below, eventually earning it the name The Dumps. Then in 1967, city leaders closed and reclaimed the beach. Various cleanup programs were undertaken.

Over the next several decades, the pounding waves cleaned the beach by breaking down everything but glass turning the sand into a sparkling, multicolored bed of smooth glass stones. The California Department of Parks and Recreation purchased the land and incorporated it into MacKerricher State Park in 2002.

Love this place.

Though it’s pretty picked over these days, it’s still pretty rad and fun to wander the shores looking at the unexpected beauty of decaying waste, sharp edges of shattered glass washed into gently rounded glowing blobs that sparkle in the sun.

The Hand of the Desert and Monument to the Drowned

Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal has produced two giant hand sculptures located in strange places. The first hand sculpture, The Hand of the Desert, is located deep in the the Atacama desert in Chile. The hand was constructed at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level. The work has a base of iron and cement, and stands 11 meters tall. The second hand, Monument to the Drowned, is a sculpture of five fingers partially submerged in sand, located at Brava Beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Amazing Kaleidoscopic Photos of Gaudí’s La Sagrada Família

Barcelona-based photographer Clement Celma captures magnificent perspectives of Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, a Roman Catholic church in Barcelona designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. The views from below, looking up at the meticulously detailed architecture, whose construction began over a century ago, is a breathtaking display of art nouveau.

There’s a geometric symmetry to the cathedral’s intricate design that is all the more mesmerizing from Celma’s perspective. Many of the images in the photographer’s collection are naturally kaleidoscopic, drawing the viewer’s eye to the center while keeping the senses occupied with the colors, lines, and patterns extending outward.

Gaudí’s vision for the monumental structure boasts spectacular details within every square inch of the architecture. Though the church remains incomplete, over a century since Gaudí began working on it in 1882, the site welcomes visitors to help fund the project. There is a projected completion date for 2026, in time for the centennial of Gaudí’s death, though it is only an estimation.
