Headlines that make my heart sink. Twice in the past month a cyclists has passed away in an accident involving a vehicle. Not to mention May is National Bike Month. This is not the type of “awareness” I like to see raised. I always urge people to be careful - but I’m usually speaking to the drivers. Strangers will ask my about the splint I’m wearing and I always end the accident story with a plea to watch out for bikers. Cyclists aren’t leaving the roads anytime soon, if nothing else, we are multiplying. Volunteer for your local bike advocacy group or donate funding. Teach those around you that don’t bike the rules of sharing the road. Talk to those who don’t want to listen. And of course, keep riding.
And also, please, cyclists; wear a helmet. please. I know they’re not always comfortable or perceived as “cool” but they can make the difference between injury and death. Motorists need to watch out, for sure, but we also need to make sure we’re protecting our domes while we’re out there.
